How to Make Money Podcasting in Ireland

How to Make Money Podcasting in Ireland

Podcasts have exploded onto the digital scene rapidly in recent years. You more than likely have listened to at least one podcast at some stage. Insider Intelligence predicts that podcasting will be a $94.88 billion industry by 2028. With over 420 million listeners worldwide, how do you get in on it? In our last post, we cover how to start a podcast discussing all the basics such as equipment, hosting, etc. This article aims to show you how to make money from your podcast in Ireland. It can be hard work, but you can make money from podcasting if you’re up for the challenge.

There are multiple ways to make money podcasting in Ireland, no matter what stage your podcast is at. Of course, you will find it easier to do once your podcast begins growing into the thousands of downloads.

Sponsors & Advertising

Sponsors & Advertising

Gaining sponsorships & advertising is probably the first thing you will think about to make money podcasting in Ireland.

If you’ve listened to a podcast, you’re likely to hear ads during an episode. Some podcasts tend to shy away from ads on their podcast as it can cause users not to listen. Most users don’t mind a quick 20-second ad to listen to an insightful podcast.

There are many podcast ad networks. These ad networks connect you with advertisers. They will help you get a sponsor, negotiate rates and more. To work with these ad networks, you usually need an audience of at least 5k to 10k per month.

A large ad network is SXM Media. They work with some of the largest podcasts worldwide, such as “Crime Junkie”, “Dateline”, and Hidden Brain”, to name a few. Getting deals with these ad networks can be tricky, and if you have a small podcast, it may not be the right avenue for you to explore.

A great option for podcasts is to reach out directly to companies that fit your target audience. If you have a niche podcast and feel you can help make sales for their business, they’ll be keen to hear your proposal. Good numbers will still be necessary, but even 1K listeners may get you a decent start to make money podcasting in Ireland.

Premium Content

Premium Content

It is a common route that podcasters go down. With premium content, you might offer your listeners:

  • Behind the scenes content
  • Ad-free podcasts
  • Q&A with the podcast hosts
  • Live streams

For example, “The 2 Johnnies Podcast” hosts an extra podcast on a Thursday over on Patreon. Listeners pay a small monthly fee and get more content and the occasional Livestream. It’s a great way for them to gain more income from their podcast and a subscription model is a profitable way to do it.

Patreon is a brilliant way for podcasters to make money podcasting in Ireland. Having a monthly revenue stream can be very beneficial to podcasters.

The only thing with premium content is that people should already know either who you are or your podcast. They will not just sign up because you dropped a few sports podcasts. You will have to build up a relationship and trust with your audience.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is a topic we have covered a lot on Fetch, and it is very prominent on podcasts. The way it works is that you get a commission when you refer people to other companies. You then typically earn money when someone makes a purchase. You may promote it on your podcast with a discount code or drop it on the show’s description.

There are many affiliate programs, with Amazon being the most popular worldwide. Buzzsprout even has an affiliate marketplace which you can join today. Here they explain how to use the service and promote the affiliate products. It’s worth checking out!

Donations

It may be difficult to keep putting hours into a great podcast, and your listeners may not know that you’re not making money podcasting. You could ask your listeners if they would like to donate to support your work. Patreon is an excellent place for podcasters to accept donations for their content.

Sell Merchandise

Sell Merchandise

If fans love your podcast, why not give them the opportunity to support your podcast by selling custom merchandise like t-shirts or stickers. It’s a great way to make money podcasting in Ireland and also promotes the podcast, so it’s a win-win.

There are many websites where you can run a merch store, and they will handle everything, or you can source it all yourself. However, it can be a lot better to get a 3rd party to deal with it and stick to what you know, which is podcasting.
